UPDATE: September 5, 2018

Recent communication with the Oakland Museum of California indicates the decision as to  the new owner of the Best Steam Traction engine , has been delayed until the end of September.

UPDATE:  August 8, 2018

SHS is currently awaiting the decision by Oakland Museum of California as to who will be the new owner of the Best Steam Traction Engine.  The decision is expected this month.

SHS is working to bring the Best Steam Traction Engine back to Shingletown.  The engine worked in the logging industry from the late 1800’s to 1936 when it was retired.  In early 1970 it was sold to the Oakland Museum of California.

The OMOC is looking for a new owner/custodian.  SHS is preparing a Proposal to submit to OMOC in order to fulfill our DREAM of having this mighty machine returned.

You can contact SHS by email shingletownhistorical@frontier.com or by phone 530-474-3291 or by calling a Board Member to receive further information.

  1. I wholeheartedly support bringing back the Best steam tractor to Shasta County. It should never have been sold. Hopefully the log carts behind the engine in the photo can be brought back also.
I would definitely contribute toward this worthy goal and project.
